THROW BACK MOMENT

Two Maysville natives faced off in UK’s Memorial Gym

This Throwback Thursday moment is a classic if you love Maysville- Saint Patrick high school basketball history. Francis Stahl was a great star for the Paddies and Gerry Calvert for the Dogs in the 50s here in Maysville. Stahl was one of the best, it not the best dribbler who ever played here in our area. Gerry Calvert was smooth as Pogue’s whiskey as he could do it all. Calvert went to play for Adolph Rupp at UK and Stahl started out in Villanova. He later transferred to Xavier where he was a star in the Queen City. Well in 1955 they faced off as Xavier visited UK in Memorial gym.

I have attached a throwback pic of the great Saint Patrick star, Francis Stahl in action with his Xavier team as they played UK in 1955. He scored 21 points, but the Muskies fell short to the Wildcats, 66 to 55. Calvert tallied 12 points for the Cats. In a related note about Gerry Calvert who is still practicing law at the age of 85, he was chosen to be one of Adolph Rupps pallbearers in 1978.
