MOREHEAD, Ky. – Senior forward Orlandra Humphries recorded her first-career double-double as the Morehead State Women’s Basketball team saw a late comeback effort fall short in a 57-51 loss to Eastern Illinois in Ohio Valley Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Arena.
The Eagles trailed 36-22 with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter before a resilient 23-10 run to cut the deficit to one point with 6:05 to go in the game. The Panthers answered with a 7-0 run of their own to create the separation needed to hang on for the six-point win.
“I was pleased with our effort today,” said MSU head coach Greg Todd. “Eastern Illinois is a good offensive team that I thought we defended well but some turnovers we committed in the second quarter gave them some extra possessions allowing them to get a lead like they did.”
Humphries, a six-foot- forward from Chicago, tallied 12 points and grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds. Of her 12 markers, eight came during the Eagles run in the second half.
Freshman Tomiyah Alford led Morehead State in scoring with 13 points while senior Breuna Jackson scored 11 points. The double-figure scoring effort for Jackson marks her sixth time in the last seven games with at least 10 points.
The Panthers were led by Karle Pace with 25 points. The win moves EIU to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the OVC.
The Eagles fall to 6-10 overall and 2-2 in league play with the loss.
Next up, Morehead State travels to the Music City for a Thursday night matchup with Tennessee State. The Eagles and Lady Tigers are slated for a 6:30 p.m. ET tipoff at the Gentry Center in Nashville, Tenn.
