UK Women Wear Down Lady Aggies in 76-54 Win

Lexington, KY-  As the temperature dropped outside, so did the Kentucky Wildcats Women’s first quarter shooting. UK shot a dismal 25 percent from the floor the first quarter, including 1-9 from the three point range, but managed to edge out 12th ranked Texas A&M 13-12.

But the Lady Aggies were in thoroughbred country and things quickly here as Kentucky finished strong down the stretch defeating the Lady Aggies 76-54 in a packed Memorial Coliseum.

UK Sophomore standout Rhyne Howard had eight first quarter points but was forced to go to the bench early in the second quarter after picking up her second foul of the game. A&M Coach Gary Blair was not happy his team did not take advantage in the second quarter with Howard on the sidelines.

“We only scored eight points with their best player on the bench. We have to learn to play with more emotion,” Blair said. “We’ve got to get better. It’s all on us,” Blair added.

UK Coach Matthew Mitchell was pleased with his team’s performance as 11th ranked Cats picked up their 15th win on the season and improved to 3-1 in SEC league play.

“Extremely proud of how we played tonight. Howard got into early foul trouble and her teammates responded with a 21 point second quarter performance.”

Howard recorded a double-double having 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds on the night. Two other UK players scored in double figures as Sabrina Haines had 15 and Blair Green added 13 points on the night.

Kentucky returns to action Sunday when they travel to Baton Rouge for a matchup with the Lady Tigers of LSU. The Lady Aggies will also have a Sunday afternoon matchup at home when they host the Florida Gators.
