Lady Saints Close Out Season with Win Over Burgin

By Victor McKay

Burgin, KY – The St. Patrick Lady Saints finished the regular season Wednesday night with a 55-43 win over Burgin. It was the Saint’s fourth game in five days, and it took a strong second half to pull out the win and earn their 15th win of the year.

The Lady Saints struggled in the first half and got into foul trouble early that sent starters Justina Klee, Allison Hughes and Caroline McKay to the sidelines for the better part of the second quarter. Burgin took advantage as St. Patrick was forced to go to a zone defense and took a 33-30 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Lady Saints opened the second half with full court pressure and held the Lady Bulldogs to just two points in the third quarter and take a 45-34 lead into the final period of play. The Saints outscored Burgin 10-8 in the final period and escape with an 11-point win despite three of their main players fouling out. Klee, Hughes and MaKenna Roush each fouled out in the fourth period and were forced to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines.

Klee had a game high 15 points followed by fellow senior Libby Gallenstein who managed 12 points to the night. The Saint’s leading scorer Allison Hughes was held to just seven points as a result of getting into early foul trouble.

The Saints will have less than a week to prepare for their upcoming district tournament game against the Augusta Lady Panthers. Both schools played twice this season with each winning on their home floor. Tip off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Bracken County High School.
