ELSTON CLOSES INAGURAL CAMPAIGN WITH WOMEN’S HOOPS AS OVC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK

By Ted McCoart, Morehead State Athletic Media RelationsMOREHEAD, Ky. – After posting combining for 40 points in Morehead State Women’s Basketball’s final two games of the 2019-20 season, junior guard Jazzmyn Elston has earned Ohio Valley Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week honors.

Elston, who transferred to Morehead State after playing her freshman and sophomore seasons at State Fair (Mo.), scored 21 points in a loss at Austin Peay on Thursday before tallying 19 in a defeat at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.

The 5-foot-9 Rossville, Ga., product led the Eagles in scoring during both contests as she knocked down 15-of-31 (.484) shots from the field and 5-of-15 (.333) attempts from beyond the arc in the two games.

“Jazzmyn finished the year being our most efficient player,” said MSU head coach Greg Todd. “Her ability to create her own shot and penetrate to the basket make her difficult to guard. Myself and our staff are glad to have Jazzmyn back for her senior season and look forward to her continuing to work to improve her game.”

Elston, now a two-time OVC Newcomer of the Week recipient after previously earning the honor on Jan. 21, finished her junior season as the team’s leading scorer, averaging 11.7 points in 27 games. In OVC play only, Elston’s 13.5 points per game placed her at eight on the league’s scoring leaderboard.
