SEC Basketball Update (3/9/20)

Conference Notes

·   Kentucky clinched its 49th SEC regular season championship and the No. 1 seed in the SECTournament. Auburn, LSU and Mississippi State joined the Wildcats as teams receiving double-byes.

·   LSU’s Skyler Mays was named CoSIDA Academic All-America of Year for Division I men’s basketball.

·   Seven teams rank in the Top 60 of the NCAA’s NET rankings (tied second-most among all conferences).

·   All 14 SEC schools have played schedules that rank among the Top 100 in the nation.

·   There have been 37 instances in which an SEC player has scored 30+ points in a single game already this season. That is the most in the league over the last 20 years. The previous most were 30 games in 2009.

·   Four players from SEC schools were selected to the 2020 NBA All-Star Game: Bam Adebayo (Kentucky), Anthony Davis (Kentucky), Khris Middleton (Texas A&M), Ben Simmons (LSU).

·   Ten different SEC teams have received votes in the AP Poll this season.

·   The seventh annual Big 12/SEC Challenge on January 25 resulted with both leagues taking home five wins. Over the last four years of the Challenge, both conferences have won 20 games.

·   Thirteen current SEC players have earned their degrees, including five – Jamario Bell (AR), Anfernee McLemore (AU), Jalen Johnson (UT), Josh Nebo (AM), Wendell Mitchell (AM) and Mitchell Storm (MS) – who graduated in December.

·   Six SEC teams rank among the 50 youngest NCAA Division I teams according to KenPom.com – Florida ninth, Kentucky 17th, Vanderbilt 28th, South Carolina 29th, LSU 39th and Georgia 41st.

Team/Individual Notes

·   SEC co-Players of the Week – Texas A&M guard Wendell Mitchell and Vanderbilt guard Saben Lee were named co-Players of the Week. Mitchell, a 6-foot-3, 183-pound senior from Rockdale, Texas, averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists in wins at No. 17 Auburn and against Arkansas.  Mitchell matched his career high with 25 points in the win over Arkansas on Senior Day Lee, a 6-foot-2, 183-pound junior from Phoenix, Ariz., averaged 28.5 points, six rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks in wins at Alabama and against South Carolina. Lee scored a career-high 38 points in the win at Alabama, the second-most points ever in a road game by a Vanderbilt player.

·   SEC Freshman of the Week – Vanderbilt guard Scotty Pippen Jr., a 6-foot-1, 170-pound freshman from Los Angeles, Calif., averaged 17 points, 3.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals in wins at Alabama and against South Carolina. Fifteen of his career-high tying 21 points against South Carolina came in the second half as he also set a new career mark with three steals. He converted 15-of-16 free throws against the Gamecocks and finished the week 21-of-25 at the line.

·   Alabama set SEC records for 3-pointers made (22) and attempts (59) against Auburn on Feb. 12.

·   Arkansas’ Mason Jones is one of three players nationally to have multiple 40-point games: 41 vs. Tulsa (Dec. 14) and 40 vs. Auburn (Feb. 4).

·   Vanderbilt’s Saben Lee (33) and Maxwell Evans (31) both scored 30+ points against LSU on Feb. 5. They became the first teammates in the SEC to have 30 or more points in the same game since UK’s Jodie Meeks (32) and Patrick Patterson (33) against Tennessee State on Dec. 22, 2008.
