KHSAA Board of Control Meets

Commissioner Julian Tackett

Kentucky High School Athletics Association Commissioner Julian Tackett gave updates to the board of control Wednesday about the fall sports season and the upcoming winter sports.

Addressing the subject of football, Tackett said that most school systems were following the proper protocols but some in south central Kentucky were treading on thin ice. “We have a couple of school systems that I would say are in danger of getting a letter from us that recommends they not hold any competitions,” Tackett said. “They are totally ignoring any of the guidance. “They’re not requiring masks. As a matter of fact, their ADs are meeting teams without a mask on. There’s just an almost ambivalence to the fact that there’s even a problem.”

In other action the KHSAA set fall championship dates with some adjustments.

Cross County will have championships October 30th thru November 1st. The championships have historically been held on the same day but will be moved to a Thursday thru Sunday format. The venue will remain at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Volleyball championships will move to a semistate format with only eight teams advancing to Valley High School for the state tournament. Regions will be divided in 1-8 and 9-16 and a blind draw will determine the matchups. State quarterfinals will be played Friday November 6th and the semifinals and finals on November 7th.

Golf championships will be held for the boys on October 6th and 7th and the girl’s on Octobrer 9th and 10th. Tackett said the tournament may have to be moved from the Bowling Green Country Club due to the area having higher Covid-19 numbers. The board of control gave the go ahead to look for a different venue if safety concerns warranted moving the tournaments.

Winter sports will have some slight delays, mailny affecting basketball. Practice dates for basketball will be pushed back to October 26th with games beginning on November 23rd. The reason for that change was the overlapping of volleyball district tournaments starting on October 19th. The change will not effect the start dates of the post season tournaments.

Other starts will be as follows:

Bowling practice on November 2nd

Competitive Cheerleading and Dance may begin practice September 21st

Wrestling practice begins November 2nd & competitions on December 7th

Swimming practice starts on November 2nd & meets on November 16th
